Campidoglio

Campidoglio, aka “Monte Capitolino”, is historically the most important hill of Rome. In ancient times, it served as the religious and political centre of the city and it was redesigned by Michelangelo, who gave it a harmonious and monumental appearance.
Nowadays, it hosts the Musei Capitolini and the headquarter of Rome City Counsil.
It owes its name, derived from the Latin “Capitolium”, to the discovery of a human head during the first Etruscan excavations.
In ancient times, it was the site of the Temple of Zeus “Ottimo Massimo”, the most sacred and majestic temple of the Republic and Empire eras. Nearby stands the “Rupe Tarpea”, a rock where the traitors of the state were thrown from.
In 1471 Pope Sisto 4th inaugurated the Musei Capitolini, and this hill became the most ancient Public Museum of the world.

WHAT TO VISIT
Musei Capitolini: they are housed within the two palaces that border Piazza del Campidoglio. Here we can admire the famous Lupa Capitolina and the original equestrian statue of Marco Aurelio.
Palazzo Senatorio: today it is the headquarter of the Rome City Council.
Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli: it can only be reached by a steep staircase, as it is located at the highest point of the hill. It is famous for the sculpture of the “Santo Bambino”.
Cordonata Capitolina: it is the monumental staircase designed by Michelangelo, that leads to the square starting from Piazza Venezia.

Viminale hill

Viminale is the smallest of the 7 hills of Rome, whose name derives from the willow groves that covered it. Today, it is home to the headquarters of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the majestic palace of Viminale. Around the hill there are some important cultural attractions, as Piazza della Repubblica and Teatro dell ‘opera. In the Roman era, it was a residential area and at the end of the 3rd century it was partially occupied by the famous Baths of Diocleziano.

WHAT TO VISIT

Palace of Viminale: it was designed by the architect Manfredo Manfredi and it is the headquarter of Ministry of the Interior from 1925. It consists of five floors and hundreds of rooms; it is monumental and fascinating.

Baths of Diocleziano: they are the biggest and majestic baths of the ancient Rome, and they accommodated more than 3000 people. Today they are part of the National Roman Museum.

Basilica di Santa Maria degli angeli e dei martiri: it was designed by Michelangelo and set in the frigidarium of Baths of Diocleziano. It is a Catholic Church, where official cerimonies of Italian Republic take place.

Teatro dell’opera: it is the temple of opera and ballet, and it was inaugurated in 1880. It has hosted legendary world premieres, including Tosca. As regard to summer schedule, it moves many of its events in the wonderful setting of Circo Massimo.
